Palmaz Vineyards

Carved into the hillside

Nestled in the rolling hills of Napa Valley, Palmaz Vineyards offers a unique blend of old-world winemaking traditions and cutting-edge technology. Known for its extraordinary wines and innovative approach, Palmaz Vineyards is a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts seeking a one-of-a-kind experience.

Palmaz Vineyards was founded by Dr. Julio Palmaz, a renowned Argentine cardiologist and inventor of the Palmaz coronary stent, along with his wife, Amalia. In the 1990s, the couple purchased a historic estate in the Coombsville AVA of Napa Valley, where they began their journey into winemaking. The property, originally settled in the 1800s, had a rich history of viticulture, making it the perfect location for their vision.

The Palmaz family’s passion for wine, coupled with Dr. Palmaz’s innovative spirit, led to the creation of one of the most technologically advanced wineries in the world. Today, the estate is run by the Palmaz family, with each member contributing to the winery's success.

What truly sets Palmaz Vineyards apart is its state-of-the-art winemaking facility, which is built into the side of Mount George. The winery features a gravity-flow system, which gently moves the wine through the production process without the use of pumps, preserving the integrity of the wine. This method is inspired by ancient winemaking techniques but is executed with modern precision.

Technology meets wine

At the heart of the winery is the Fermentation Dome, an architectural marvel that spans 72 feet in diameter and houses 24 custom-built stainless steel fermentation tanks. What’s truly impressive is the use of a proprietary software system called FILCS (Fermentation Intelligent Logic Control System), which monitors and adjusts the fermentation process in real-time. This system allows for an unprecedented level of control over the winemaking process, ensuring consistency and quality in every bottle.

The integration of technology at Palmaz Vineyards doesn’t stop there. The estate also uses drones to monitor the health of the vineyards, and a network of sensors in the soil helps the team manage irrigation and other vineyard practices with precision.

The Palmaz Tasting

Palmaz Vineyards is known for producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of their estate. Their flagship wine, the Palmaz Cabernet Sauvignon, is a standout, offering a deep, complex flavor profile with notes of dark fruit, chocolate, and spice. This wine is a true expression of Napa Valley's potential, showcasing the elegance and power of the region’s best Cabernet Sauvignons.

In addition to their Cabernet Sauvignon, Palmaz Vineyards produces a range of other wines, including Chardonnay, Riesling, and a Bordeaux-style blend called "Gaston," named after Dr. Palmaz’s father. Each wine is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in wines that are both approachable and age-worthy.

A visit to Palmaz Vineyards is unlike any other in Napa Valley. Tastings are by appointment only and are highly personalized. Guests are treated to a tour of the winery, where they can see firsthand the incredible technology that goes into making Palmaz wines. The tour includes a visit to the Fermentation Dome and the extensive wine caves, which house thousands of barrels of aging wine.

After the tour, guests are invited to a seated tasting of Palmaz wines, paired with gourmet bites. The experience is both educational and indulgent, allowing visitors to truly appreciate the craftsmanship and innovation behind each wine.

Palmaz Vineyards offers a unique blend of tradition and technology that sets it apart from other wineries in Napa Valley. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, a wine lover, or simply someone looking for a memorable experience, Palmaz Vineyards has something to offer. The combination of stunning wines, cutting-edge technology, and warm hospitality makes this winery a must-visit destination in Napa Valley.
