Venge Vineyards
Where Tradition and Taste Converge
Along the iconic Silverado Trail in Napa Valley, nestled in Calistoga, lies the charming 12-acre Venge Vineyards. This small, family-owned vineyard is the creation of third-generation winemaker Kirk Venge. Positioned in a prime location with a unique microclimate and diverse soil types, including the distinctive bone ash soil that nourishes their renowned Bone Ash Cabernet Sauvignon, Venge Vineyards offers a truly special wine experience.
Venge Vineyards is deeply committed to sustainable farming practices and environmentally responsible winemaking. They work diligently to minimize their ecological footprint through methods like cover cropping, composting, and water conservation. With estate vineyards and select grapes sourced from across Napa Valley, Venge is known for their outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Pinot Noir, though their portfolio includes other varietals as well.
Upon arrival, we were initially unsure if we had found the right place due to the minimal signage. But a small placard reading “Venge” reassured us we were indeed at the right spot. As we drove past the vineyard, we arrived at the main industrial warehouse used for production and a cozy little cottage perched on a hill, where the tastings take place. Surrounded by vibrant flowers, the tasting house offers a warm and colorful welcome.
As soon as we checked in for our reservation, we were greeted with a glass of the 2022 Zinfandel. Typically, I’m not a fan of Zinfandel, especially not at 10:30 AM on a Sunday, but this one changed my perspective. Lightly chilled with pronounced red fruit notes, it was the perfect start to our morning of tastings. We savored the wine as we strolled around the property, soaking in the beauty and capturing some content.
Our Tasting Experience
Our host, Meleah, was a highlight of the experience. Warm, down-to-earth, and incredibly knowledgeable, she guided us through the tasting with a passion for Venge Vineyards that was contagious. Her banter made the experience even more enjoyable, and it was clear that she truly loves what she does.
During our visit, Venge’s focus on red wines was evident. Our tasting featured several exceptional wines, including a Horizontal Tasting of their Cabernet Sauvignon:
2022 Zinfandel
2021 Bone Ash Cabernet Sauvignon
Horizontal Tasting of 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon from:
Venge Estate vineyard (Left)
Southern Napa Valley vineyard (Middle)
Atlas Peak vineyard (Right)
The tasting took place on the balcony of a converted home, now a tasting space. With only four tables outside and no more than two tables tasting at a time, the atmosphere was incredibly intimate, allowing us to focus fully on the wines and the stunning surroundings. The balcony overlooked the vineyard, with rows of vines stretching toward the mountains in the distance. With clear blue skies above, the setting was picture-perfect.
For lovers of Napa Valley red wines, Venge Vineyards is a must-visit. The staff’s friendliness and expertise, combined with the peaceful environment and exceptional wines, create an unforgettable experience. If you’re looking to unwind and savor some truly remarkable red wines, Venge Vineyards will transport you to a simpler time, where porch sitting and good conversation reign supreme.
